Massa Marittima stands on the top of a hill in the Alta Maremma in Tuscany, only a few kilometres from the seaside, surrounded by landscapes of arresting natural beauty and places of great historical and cultural interest.
Sport enthusiasts will have the opportunity to practise outdoor sports.
You can go mountain biking on routes ranging from 16 to 60 km. They go from the hills to the sea along woodland paths, tracks through fields and old railway lines, all marked on detailed maps. On request, it is possible to have specialised guides or material showing the routes. The difficulty of the routes varies, but nevertheless they all unite nature, culture, landscape and history.
You can explore places off the beaten track on horseback along paths around or through Mediterranean woods of centuries-old holm and common oaks. With the backup of specialised structures, charming excursions can be arranged for all those with a passion for riding. This area, like the whole of the Maremma, has strong horse-riding traditions. Just think of the typical Maremman cowboys, the butteri.
The territory around Massa, characterised by a prevalently hilly landscape, alternates the sweetness of the Tuscan countryside with the spellbinding dense woods and wonderful panoramas that can be admired from the majestic high travertine ridges. All this offers countless opportunities not only for those who wish to walk, but also for those who make their trekking into a real sporting activity.
