The districts representing the old villages compete against each other every third Sunday of May in the Palio dei Barchini con le Ruote (boat race on wheels), when the town comes to life with musicians and flag-wavers of all ages, dressed in period costumes. The town’s historical past can be seen in its typical Roman castrum layout and in certain buildings of particular artistic interest, such as the Collegiate Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo, built in 1284 and enlarged in Baroque style in 1719. Castelfranco is famous for its leather goods and has numerous tanneries specialised in the manufacture of footwear. It is also an excellent starting point for nature lovers, with footpaths leading to the Cerbaie, hills covered with groves of pine and oak, with stops at a choice of three natural springs along the way: the Fonte del Leone; the Fonte del Sasso and the Fonte di Pierdo. The Montefalcone Natural Reserve, with beautiful picnic areas, is worth a visit. As a treat for the taste buds, the Festival of the Éclair each August is an event not to be missed.
